The History of
Hillcrest Assembly of God
Hillcrest was birthed on March 7th, 1973, when 25 people met at the home of Raymond and Beth Pape to seek the leadership of the Lord for their future ministry to this community. Their church home, Seguin First Assembly, donated $8,823 from a Memorial & Building Fund to help build a work for the Lord. The founding pastor was Reverend B.F. (Bob) Flowers. God called brother Flowers to build this work and the Lord sent three servants to help. The first Trustees were Mack Crump, Ted Henderson, and J.W. "Buddy" Reneau. The present church site, consisting of 3 1/2 acres of rocky land, was purchased for $30,000 on March 28th, 1973, from Hugo & Irene Pape.
Ground was broken on April 1st, 1973 and the original sanctuary was completed and occupied on November 18th, 1973. A "note burning ceremony" on March 4th, 1979, preceded a formal ground breaking for the educational and multi-purpose building, but before the second and third phases of the building program were completed, Rev. Flowers was called to a pastorate in Alvin, Texas and left on June 30th, 1979. On July 8th, 1979, Reverend Frank Williams was elected Pastor, and oversaw the completion of the Educational Building on June 30th, 1980. On July 15th, 1980, construction of the Family Life Center began, and both the Educational Building and Family Life Center were dedicated on May 24th, 1991.
Having given a big portion of their lives to Seguin, Rev. & Mrs. Williams bid farewell on November 24th, 1985 to accept a pastorate in Port Neches, Texas. The long search for a pastor was greatly aided when in May 1986, Reverend R.E. Brumbelow became the interim pastor serving until the congregation invited Rev. Erny McDonough to move from Missouri to pastor the church from October 1986 through September 1989. On January 7th, 1990 Pastor Leroy Fleck was called to shepherd this flock along with youth pastors Tim & Chris Ennis.
Donna Nance was hired to serve as church secretary on March 1st, 1990. In August, the Ennis' were called to work with Tim's father in Port LaVaca. At the same time God began to place a burden on Brent & DeLisa Williams' heart for his old youth group. October 20th, 1991 saw the completion and dedication of the new sanctuary. With the increase in attendance came the need for more parking space. Additional parking was approved by the church and completed in June 1992. Having outgrown the Fellowship Hall and moved in the Family Life Center for most church gatherings, the need for air conditioning became evident and was installed in 1993.
In August 1994 Brent and DeLisa Williams moved to the Dallas area. An invitation was extended to Aaron Morgan to work with the youth and music ministry. Aaron and Shannon worked and grew with our youth through July 1995 when they moved to Springfield to continue their education. After months of prayer and searching, the Lord blessed Hillcrest with Rev. Bobby & Lisa Nixon who began their ministry in December 1995. Many changes occurred in 1998. After forty years as a pastor, the Fleck retired and moved to Jasper, Texas. On January 28th the congregation experienced a time of sorrow and also a time of rejoicing on the home going of Rev. Bob Brumbelow. His legacy of love, humor and caring will continue to live on through the wonderful memories and his words of wisdom.
In September 1998, Rev. Don & Beth Wiehe accepted the invitation to love and shepherd the Hillcrest Church Family. We count ourselves very blessed and praise the Lord for these precious servants of God. Bobby & Lisa Nixon served Hillcrest as Youth and Children's Pastors from 1995 - 2002. They are now pastoring Hope Assembly of God in La Vernia, Texas, a church that Hillcrest pioneered in January 2003. That same month Rev. Chris & Staci Cook joined the Hillcrest pastoral staff as Youth and Childrens Pastors. The Cooks final Sunday at Hillcrest was November 18, 2007, as they felt a burden to move back to North Carolina to be with Staci's family. Michael & Jennifer Rodriguez joined the Pastoral team as Hillcrest's new Youth Pastors on December 30, 2007. They have three children, Camden, Gabby & Benjamin.
In May 2007 David Phillip Wood, his wife Trisha and their three children, Alison, Andrew & Rachel, joined the ministry team as Hillcrest's first full-time worship and music Pastor. Our prayer is that the Lord will continue to use the Hillcrest family to serve and love our community. At Hillcrest, there is a very rich history founded upon the love, mercy and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ - "So All May Know His Love".
